Vision of the Institute for the Deaf
To develop the full potential of every Deaf person.
Mission statement of the Institute for the Deaf
To empower Deaf people to attain their full potential through basic education, training, welfare services and spiritual care. To provide these services and make them accessible to the Deaf.
Focus
The world of the Deaf is small. Confined to the limits of vision, and silent, isolated from the environment. Our main concern is helping the Deaf to help themselves. Today our development projects are geared towards the 21st century. The essence of our venture revolves around technological innovation and effective distribution of knowledge and skills to all Deaf people across all boundaries.
Introducing the Institute for the Deaf
The outcry of Deaf people all over the world and for centuries is "We can do anything but hear, so treat us as normal beings". This outcry led to the establishment of the Institute for the Deaf in 1881 in Worcester, promoting the interests, human rights and well-being of Deaf people in South Africa.
It is a non-profit, private dynamic organisation and currently the only facility in South Africa and Africa with a full continuum of services to Deaf people from the cradle to old age.
Services :
These services include early identification, assessment, provision of hearing aids and assistive devices, care, education and training, development and mental health services.
The Institute for the Deaf, a private dynamic non-profit organisation, established in 1881 in Worcester in South Africa is one of the oldest and largest constituency organinsations and resource centres safeguarding and promoting the interests, human rights and well-being of Deaf people in South Africa.
